The Power of One
By Lisa Westerman
Do you often find yourself feeling anxious and overwhelmed at the thought of starting a new exercise
or health routine? Does the anxiety hold you back from taking any action? You are not alone! The hype around New Year’s resolutions, training programs, fad diets and gym memberships can be overwhelming. The truth is, it doesn’t have to be. Nothing can take the place of a healthy eating style coupled with adequate exercise, but you don’t have to make over your entire life on January 1 to start making a difference.
Here are a few simple steps to get you started off on your journey to good health:
One decision. Once a day. One week.
Easy enough, right? Let’s get started!
I challenge you to make a list of seven things you can easily add to your daily routine that will promote a healthier lifestyle. Some examples may be:
- Exchange one soda for a glass of water.
- Stretch for 10 minutes first thing in the morning.
- Eat a nutritious breakfast.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Walk for 20 minutes with a friend after dinner.
- Eat fruit instead of chips as your snack today.
Be creative and select tasks that apply to you. Write each task on a piece of paper, fold and place
in a cup by your bed labeled “TO DO.” Have another cup available labeled “DONE.” Each morning,
pull one task out of the cup and commit to following through on it that day. At the end of the day,
when the task has been completed, place it in the “DONE” cup. At the end of the week you can go
back and see how simple it was to make seven easy adjustments to your lifestyle. It is helpful to
continue this for one month adding seven new tasks each week.
This will give you momentum and jump-tsart your commitment to healthier habits, and that’s just what they will become, good habits! Won’t you join me on this journey to good health one step at a time? I would love to hear feedback from those who participate. Submit your results to firstname.lastname@example.org.
